Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane spoke to the media after watching his side beat Borussia Mönchengladbach and seal qualification for the Champions League last 16 as winners of Group H on Wednesday.

Here are Zidane’s post-match thoughts:

Reaction to Real Madrid winning the group:

“It’s hugely satisfying. The goal was to try and finish top and we managed it. We put in a brilliant performance in every department, from the first minute to the final whistle, reading the game really well.”

Real Madrid’s most complete performance of the season?

“Yes, I think so. Today we put in a really good all-round display.”

Why don’t we see this Real Madrid every week?

“You can’t always play well, it’s impossible. You always try to. My players always want to play well.”

Madrid seem to reserve their best performances for when they’re under pressure:

“Yes, but it’s not only when we’re under pressure. We’ve played good games [under different circumstances]. […] But when the going gets tough, when it’s a must-win game, this team has that ability to stand up and be counted.”

Who needed this boost more: you or the players?

“Everyone, at the end of the day. We’re all in the same boat. I’m pleased for my players. They’re the most important ones; I’m here battling with them, getting things ready, but they’re the ones who have to go out there and battle and fight. I’m really happy for them.”

Importance of winning the group:

“It’s crucial, really important. It’s the first time we’ve managed it in my time as head coach here.”

What to expect from Real Madrid in Saturday’s derby against Atlético Madrid:

“I expect us to be at our best. We have to get a good rest in now.”
