Royston Drenthe signed for Real Madrid on a 14 million euro deal from Ajax in the summer of 2007. The Dutch winger attended AS and explained the reasons why he preferred a move to the Bernabeu and not Camp Nou.
"I chose Madrid because my father was a big madridista. A lot of my family members were Barça fans! So at home, I remember it perfectly, Ronaldinho and Eto'o were with Barcelona then, and whenever there was a game on television, all of nephews - even my aunties were all 'Barça, Barça, Barça!' and my father was the only one who supported Madrid, just to be a bit different. From that moment, I started cheering on Madrid, like my Dad. When you are a kid, you're not thinking that one day you'll receive an offer from Real Madrid! When the offer was on the table, I didn't have to think very much about to be honest. And also, when I was chatting to the club on the telephone, (I was still just a young man, 20 years old), I got the best feeling talking to Madrid," he explained.
