WORLD CUP QATAR 2022
Al Thumama beats Ras Abu Aboud in stadium vote
The Al Thumama World Cup stadium received 55.6% of the vote, beating the 44.4% that went to Ras Abu Aboud, in the draw by the Organising and Legacy Committee.
A total 55.6% cast their vote for the Al Thumama World Cup stadium, while 44.4% of the votes went to Ras Abu Aboud, in the draw held via the official Twitter account of the Organising and Legacy Committee, responsible for managing the 2022 World Cup projects.
There were 1,216 voters in the draw and the result went in favour of the World Cup stadium Al Thumam, whose design is in the shape of the Al Kuffiyeh, a traditional head dress worn by men in the Gulf area.
Although neither of the two stadiums has yet been inaugurated, voters relied on photos taken of each venue placed with the draw, as well as knowledge about the stadiums, such as their excellence in terms of design.
It appears that the near completion of the Al Thumama played a part in attracting the votes in favour of the venue, as the Supreme Committee completed the installation of the external structure, in addition to the 40-seater capacity, while work is still ongoing at the Ras Abu Abuod, which will be inaugurated after the Al Thumama.
The Ras Abu Abuod, however, is a unique stadium compared to others around the world, designed by shipping containers, and is also the first detachable stadium in the history of football. But the majority of the votes were in favour of the Al Thumama, which reflects the Al Kuffiyeh.
The Al Thumama will host matches from the group round to the quarter-finals, while the final match of the round of 16 will be played in Ras Abu Abuod, which is not one of the four stadiums where quarter-final matches will be played.
