Yunus Musah chooses to play for the United States men’s national team
The 18-year-old had the option to play for England, but he has formally committed to represent the United States in international competition.
Last year Yunus Musah made his debut with the United States men’s national team in the FIFA international window of November. Since he played in exhibition matches, the 18-year-old could still play for England, Ghana and Italy if he wanted to. So the ‘Three Lions’ were very confident that they could persuade Musah who already played for England at youth level.
United States over England
This Monday Yunus Musah made his decision about representing the USMNT in international competition and he expects to be called for the upcoming friendlies against Jamaica and Northern Ireland during this month’s FIFA international window.
“I think it was pretty clear for me to decide to play for the United States,” Musah said. “First of all, I think it makes sense to represent the country I was born in. The moment I decided to play for the United States came one day when my heart told me that this was the best place for me. The project that we have now and for the future is so exciting, and it’s a great pleasure to be able to be a part of that. I can’t wait to get started.”
Musah was born in New York and he already has two caps to his name with the United States men’s national team. He is having a breakout season at Valencia and the USMNT coaching staff have been following him since 2019.
“Yunus is an exceptional talent. For his age, it’s impressive what he can do,” USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter said. “When the group first met him, we were immediately drawn to his personality and what a great person he is. When you see him play, you realize there is a ton of talent as well. We’re really excited, because not only is Yunus a player for today, he’s a player for the future.”
