The first leg had ended 1-1 in Spain, and despite Chelsea taking the lead fairly early in the second, Real Madrid kept themselves - thanks to some good fortune and the goalkeeping skills of Thibaut Courtois at times - in the tie as the game edged closer to its conclusion.

A late goal from Mason Mount made sure of the result, and The Blues would be heading to Istanbul. But how have the two clubs fared in this competition?

Chelsea: how many UCL finals?

The London Premier League club have played in two Champions League finals to date, with a 50% record.

In 2007/08 they lost to fellow English side Manchester United on penalties and then in 2011/12 beat Bayern Munich with the game also going to spot kicks to decide the winner.

Soon they will have the chance to overcome Pep Guardiola's Manchester City as Thomas Tuchel targets a major trophy in his early months at the club.

Real Madrid: how many UCL finals?

As the most successful club in the Champions League, there is no surprise that Los Blancos have appeared in the most finals of UEFA's showpiece tournament.

Their seven finals have all, rather incredibly, seen them end the occasion lifting the trophy. They do not enjoy being the bridesmaid. Current manager Zinedine Zidane also took his side to a record-equalling three consecutive finals between 2015/16 and 2017/18.

If we extend our look to the continental trophy since its conception - to include the European Cup - the same club comes out on top. Madrid have featured in 16 finals in total, five more than the next best, AC Milan. From them they have 13 titles.
