$600 Golden State Stimulus Check: how long until they are paid?

Update:
The California Franchise Tax Board (CFTB) is sending out $600 direct payments to eligible citizens, but when will the Golden State Stimulus Check arrive?

In February California Gov. Gavin Newsome signed into law a $7.6 billion state-wide relief package, known as the Golden State Stimulus bill. The package was designed to provide an economic boost to the state’s struggling individuals, families and businesses.

It took a bit of time for the California Franchise Tax Board (CFTB) to begin the enormous logistical process, but by April Newsom was able to confirm that the first wave of Golden State Stimulus Checks had been sent out. For the majority of recipients the arrival date for the direct payment depends on tax filing information; here’s everything you need to know.

When will my Golden State Stimulus Check arrive?

Eligibility for the Californian stimulus check is based on household income, with many who are eligible for other state-wide schemes qualifying automatically for the Golden State Stimulus. Because of this the CFTB relies on information from residents’ tax returns to judge whether or not they can receive the payment.

The stimulus checks will be sent out in three batches, with the first of them starting to arrive in the second half of April. The new wave will arrive later this month, while the remaining ones may not begin to arrive until late June. Here's the key dates for the Golden State Stimulus Checks...

If you filed your state tax return between 1 January and 1 March 2021, your stimulus check payment will arrive sometime after April 15, 2021.

  • Direct deposits: Up to 2 weeks
  • Paper checks: Up to 4 to 6 weeks for mailing

If you filed your state tax return between 2 March and 23 April 2021, your stimulus check payment will arrive sometime after 1 May, 2021.

  • Direct deposits: Up to 2 weeks
  • Paper checks: Up to 4 to 6 weeks for mailing

If you filed your state tax return after 23 April 2021, your stimulus check payment will take longer to arrive…

  • Direct deposits: Up to 45 days after your return has been processed
  • Paper checks: Up to 60 days after your return has processed

If you have not yet filed your 2020 tax returns with the CTFB then you have until 17 May to do so within the filing deadline and avoid paying penalty fines. However even if you miss that deadline, you will be eligible to receive a Golden State Stimulus Check as long as you complete the filing before 15 October 2021.

If your payment takes longer to arrive than expected you may have to report a lost or missing stimulus check using the CFTB’s online Fraud Referral Report. Their online portal provides all the necessary details to make your claim via mail or phone, as well as an online chat feature between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.
