Later this evening, Manchester City and Chelsea will be scrapping it out for the greatest prize in club football, the Champions League. Chelsea have been here before; this will be their eighth European final and the third time they have reached the final so they are old hands compared to City, for whom this is the first time they’ve gone all the way in 11 attempts.

Experience and honours in Europe

Both clubs do have European silverware – City lifted the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970 while Chelsea have a full collection, having won the Champions League in 2012, the Europa League in 2013 and 2019, the Cup Winners’ Cup (1971 and 1998) and the Super Cup (1998).

Both teams ended the group stage as the champions of their group. City went on to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and PSG on their way to the final while Chelsea got through the knockout stages by seeing off Atlético Madrid, Porto and Real Madrid. Around 16,500 fans have made the trip and will be cheering their sides on inside the stadium in Porto.

In domestic competition this season, Guardiola’s City ran out 1-3 winners against Chelsea at the Bridge but the Blues got their own back by winning the reverse fixture at the Etihad 1-2.

City travelled to Porto on Thursday with a 24-man squad with all of the first-choice stars fit. Guardiola’s only doubt was IIkay Gündogan who limped out of the 3-2 defeat to Brighton in the penultimate league game of the season after taking a blow to his knee. He was seen back in training and without problems earlier this week. The German midfielder has missed just one game in City’s Champions League campaign – he remained on the bench in the 0-0 draw with Porto, in the penultimate group game. Kun Agüero’s season has been blighted by fitness problems and he was excluded from the squad for four of the last seven games of the campaign but clearly had no physical issues when he fired two past Everton after coming on for the final 25 minutes on the final day of the league.

There was encouraging news for Chelsea boss Thomas Tüchel with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and N'Golo Kanté both returning to training on Wednesday. Mendy was substituted at half-time with sore ribs after colliding with a goal post during the final Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa. Kanté sat the Villa game out with a tight hamstring but has since fully recovered.

Guardiola’s City, favourites and eyeing the treble

City go into Saturday’s final looking to cap their season by adding the Champions League trophy to their Premier League and EFL Carabao Cup triumphs. Chelsea, who just crept into fourth place on the final day of action in the league, will be hoping to make amends for their FA Cup final defeat to Leicester a couple of weeks ago. But City are clear favourites with the bookies. Whatever happens, the one certainty is that Ol’ Big Ears will be on its way to England on Sunday.
