The USMNT wants revenge after losing 2019 Gold Cup final to Mexico
A late goal from Jonathan Dos Santos gave the Mexican national team the 1-0 victory against the United States in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup final.
Everything is set between the United States and Mexico to face off in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League in Denver, Colorado in the tournament's inaugural edition. This is the first time since 2019 that both teams play against each other and the USMNT wants revenge for what happened two years ago.
Another edition of ‘El Clásico de la CONCACAF’
A late goal from Jonathan Dos Santos gave ‘El Tri’ the 1-0 victory against the United States Men’s national team (USMNT) in the Gold Cup final. This was Mexico’s eighth trophy and left the USMNT empty handed.
From the final loss against Mexico, there are six players in this current roster who were present at the Soldier Field in Chicago. Zack Steffen, Tim Ream, Reggie Cannon, Matt Miazga, Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie want to seek revenge tonight in the CONCACAF Nations League final.
On the other hand, Mexico’s current roster includes 9 players who defeated the United States two years ago. Guillermo Ochoa, Luis Rodríguez, Carlos Salcedo, Héctor Moreno, Jesús Gallardo, Edson Álvarez, Andrés Guardado, Carlos Rodríguez and Uriel Antuna want to become back-to-back champions in consecutive CONCACAF tournaments.
The USMNT doesn’t have a positive record against Mexico in finals
The United States head coach, Gregg Berhalter, has made it clear that it is time for this ‘golden generation’ to step it up and start winning trophies. The last time the USMNT won the Gold Cup was in 2017 and the last time they defeated Mexico in this tournament’s final was in 2007.
In that year the USMNT was coached by Bob Bradley and they were losing in the first half. It was thanks to a penalty kick from Landon Donovan and a ‘golazo’ from Benny Feilhaber that gave the United States the 2-1 victory at the Soldier Field in Chicago. Mexico and the United States have faced in 5 finals throughout their history and ‘El Tri’ has won five and only lost once.
