USMNT vs Haiti: Gold Cup Group B preview
The United States men’s national team take on Haiti in the opening round of 2021 Gold Cup Group B games on Sunday, as the Stars and Stripes begin their bid to be crowned CONCACAF champions for the seventh time.
The USMNT, who were runners-up to Mexico at the 2019 Gold Cup, have named a tournament roster largely made up of MLS players, head coach Gregg Berhalter opting to rest Europe-based stars such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Sergiño Dest.
The US last won the Gold Cup in 2017.
Haiti, who qualified for the tournament proper by beating Bermuda in the second preliminary round on Tuesday, produced their best-ever Gold Cup finish two years ago, downing Canada in the quarter-finals before being edged out by Mexico in the last four.
The Haitians won the former CONCACAF Championship in 1973, but hadn’t previously gone beyond the quarter-finals since the Gold Cup’s inception in 1991.
