Simone Biles looking to go one better in Tokyo with six golds
The United States gymnast rose to stardom during the Rio Olympics in 2016 by winning four gold medals and one bronze medal.
Simone Biles is on the verge of making history at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The United States gymnast first announced herself to the world at the Rio Olympics in 2016, winning four gold medals and a bronze. In Tokyo the 24-year-old could add six more gold medals to her name.
Biles eyeing six Tokyo golds
This will be Biles' second Olympic appearance and she has previously hinted that retirement is not on her mind with an eye on the 2024 Paris Olympics. Biles is one gold medal away from becoming the oldest American woman to win the all-around and if she claims two medals in Tokyo, she will tie Shannon Miller as the most decorated US Olympic gymnast of all time.
The gymnast made her debut in Tokyo on 25 July but struggled during Sunday’s qualifiers. “It wasn’t an easy day or my best but I got through it,” Biles wrote in an Instagram post Monday morning. “I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times. I know I brush it off and make it seem like pressure doesn’t affect me but damn sometimes it’s hard hahaha! The Olympics is no joke!”
The United States squad posted a 170.562 with the ROC team scoring 171.626 to finish above the USA in the team standings for the first time since 2010 at a major event.
Biles is up next on Tuesday in the women’s team final and she will then compete in the women’s all-around (29 July), vault final (1 August), uneven bars final (1 August), floor final (2 August) and floor exercise (2 August).
