Handball: Norway brush past Japan

Norway proved too strong for Japan beating the hosts 37-25 to progress to the quarter finals of the women's handball event where they will face Hungary at Yoyogi stadium on Wednesday.

 

Team GB advance to the women's hockey semis

Great Britain have made it through to the semi-finals of the women's hockey event after beating Spain in the penalty shootout after their game ended level at 2-2. The Netherlands await Team GB in Wednesday's semi-finals.

Baseball: Japan edge Team USA in Yokohama

Hosts Japan beat USA 7-6 in 10 innings in their Round 2 meeting in Yokohama to make the Final Four in the baseball event. Japan will meet defending champions South Korea on Wednesday.

Camacho-Quinn wins women's 100m hurdles

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn wins women's 100m hurdles edged world record holder, Team USA's Kendra Harrison to the gold medal in the women's 100m hurdles. Camacho-Quinn crossed the line on 12:37 secs, ahead of Harrison (12:52 and Jamaica's Megan Jam Tapper (12:55) to win Puerta Rico's first medal at the Games.

 

Allman takes discus gold for US

American’s Valarie Allman has won gold in the women’s discus throw, her effort of 68.98m beating Germany’s Kristin Pudenz into second and Cuba’s Yalme Pérez into third.

Hassan claims gold in women's 5000 final

The Netherlands' Sifan Hassan has won the women's 5000m final, streaking clear of Kenya's Hellen Obiri in second and Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay in third. That's the Dutch team's first athletics gold in 29 years.

The US' Karissa Schweizer finished 11th, while fellow American Elise Cranny came 13th.

El Bakkali wins men's 3000m steeplechase

Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali has won gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, with Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma taking silver and Kenya’s Benjamin Kigan claiming bronze. The USA’s Benard Keter finished 11th.

Baseball: Japan lead the US

Japan leading the US 6-5 going into the 7th inning. The winner goes to the semi-final where they will meet Korea.

Three Americans qualify for women's 400m final

Anna Cockrell battled hard at the end to overtake Viktoriya Tkachuk (UKR) to claim second in third and last semi-final of the women's 400m. The Netherlands' Femke Bol wins the race and is also through.

So that means we have three Team USA members in the final: Dalilah Muhammad, Sydney McLaughlin and Anna Cockrell.

More wins on the track for Team USA

In the women's 400m hurdles semi-final 1, Dalilah Muhammad cruises to victory in heavy rain with a time of 53.30. Well behind her in second place was Janieve Russell (JAM), with a time of 54.10.

In semi-final two, WR holder Sydney McLaughlin also won for Team USA (53.03), with Gianna Woodruff (PAN) in second. All four of those athletes go through to the final.

Rain coming down heavy at the Olympic stadium

Rain is literally putting a dampener on proceedings at the Olympic stadium, particularly for the field athletes. Two field events have been postponed as a result: the women's pole vault qualification and the women's discuss throw final.

Michael Cherry wins 400m semi-final

Team USA's Michael Cherry took victory in the men's 400m semi-final 2 with a time of 44.44. He goes through to the final along with second-placed Chris Taylor of Jamaica, who came in at 44.92.

Baseball: USA and Japan currently in play

Japan currently leading the USA 1-0 in the third inning. Due to the modified double-elimination tournament bracket, the winner of this game will progress directly to the semi-final against Korea, who beat Israel 11–1 in 7 innings earlier today.

Gymanstics: Jade Carey wins floor gold

American Jade Carey produced a series of high-flying tumbling combinations to win gold on the floor exercise at the Tokyo Games on Monday, while Mai Murakami became the first Japanese woman to win an individual Olympic gymnastics medal.

The absence of 2016 floor champion Simone Biles from the final due to mental health struggles had left the field wide open and Carey made the most of her opportunity to grab gold with a score of 14.366 points.

The win allowed Carey to heal her dented pride after she finished last among the eight competitors in Monday's vault final Italian Vanessa Ferrari, a world all around champion in 2006, finally got her hands on an Olympic medal at the age of 30 when she claimed silver with 14.200.

Canada defeat USA in women's soccer semi-final

A lone penalty goal from Jessie Fleming was enough to see Canada past the United States in the Tokyo Olympics women's soccer semi-final. Big disappointment for Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and Co. Canada will face either Australia or Sweden in the final. Those two square off in the second semi-final a bit later.

China wins first gold in track cycling

After setting a new WR in the semi-final, China's BAO Shanju and ZHONG Tianshi defeated Germany's Lea Friedrich and Emma Hinze in the women's team sprint final. ROC pair Schmeleva and Anastasiia Voinovatake, who were silver medalists in Rio in 206, take the bronze medal this time after beating the Netherlands.

Huge news from USA Gymnastic: Simone Biles to return tomorrow!

Simone Biles will compete in the beam final, which takes place tomorrow. Biles has sat out the last few events due to mental health issues but is ready to return, as USA Gymnastics confirmed.

"We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow - Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!" it tweeted.

Another world record broken at the velodrome

Wow! They're flying at the velodrome today with two world records broken within the space of an hour. After Germany set a new WR in the women's team pursuit, China have now done the same in the women's team sprint, with a time 31.804. China and Germany will contest for gold and silver; ROC and Netherlands for bronze.

Germany's women's team pursuit team, Franziska Brausse, Lisa Brennauer, Lisa Klein, and Mieke Kroeger, have a set new world record with 4:07.307, beating the previois record set by Great Britain at Rio by 3 seconds

USWNT vs Canada gets underway at 4am (ET)

Sailing postponed due to poor winds.

Today's sailing events, including the women's 49er FX and men's 49er medal races, have been postponed to poor winds.

Badminton: Indonesia defeat China to take gold

Indonesia women's doubles pair, Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu, defeated China's Hen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan (CHN) in straight sets (21-19, 21-15) to win the their first ever world-level Championship title. The pair were bronze medallists at the 2018 and 2019 world championships, as well as at the 2018 Asian Games.

USA defeat France in women's basketball

Team USA have just defeated France 93-82. in the final round of action in Group B. The USA advance to the next round following their 51st consecutive win. A'ja Wilson was the USA's points leader in the game, making a total of 22 points and 7 rebounds. France may still go through but will have to wait on the results of other games.

Women's hockey: India reach first-ever semi-final

India's women have made their first ever Olympic hockey semi-final following their 1-0 win over Australia 1–0 in the quarters. Gurjit Kaur scored a penalty corner to give India the historic win. Argentina won the first quarter final earlier with a 3-0 win over Germany.

Close opening game goes Indonesia's way

The opening game of the gold medal women's badminton doubles match was skin tight, with Indonesia edging out China 21-19. Rahayu and Polii are just a 21 points from the top of the podium and the top of the badminton world.

France gave Team USA all they had in the first half of the second game of today's women's basketball group stages. France had the lead late in the second quarter, but the Americans charged back to go into the halftime break up 50-44

The next event to give out a gold is underway with the badminton doubles final underway.

Sailing delayed until winds pick up

The start of Monday’s Olympic sailing programme has been delayed as organisers wait for winds to pick up at the Enoshima Yachting Harbour.

The venue was supposed to host the final two opening series races in the men’s and women’s 470 classes, as well as the medal races in the 49er class for both genders later in the afternoon.

The weather forecast published by World Sailing early on Monday morning predicts that winds will remain light at four to six knots until the early evening. World Sailing previously told reporters that winds of at least six knots would be necessary to ensure fair competition.

Next up we head to the badminton court where H.Y. Kong S.Y. Kim have defeated S.C. Shin S.H. Lee in a South Korean battle for bronze.

India pull off the miracle!!! They are on to their first Olympic semifinals after knocking out a heavliy favored Australia. The Hockeyroos had some clear looks at goal in the final four minutes, but the defense for India held strong.  They will take on Argentina in the semis

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn becomes the first Puerto Rican to win an athletics gold medal, and gives her country just their second ever gold medal in Olympics history, after Monica Puig won gold in tennis in 2016.

Argentina are on to the semis after a thumping 3-0 win over Germany in the quarter. Australia and India is in progress at the moment and the other to quarterfinal matches will start later today.

And just like that it's over!! Puerto Rico's Jasmine Camacho-Quinn wins gold with a time of 12.37!!! Kendra Harris (USA) finishes second and Megan Tapper (JAM) gets the bronze with a third place finish.

Drama in the last jump of the men's long jump final as Greek Miltiadis Tentoglu wins gold with a jump of 8.41m. The Greek was unsure even moments after the results were posted, and seemed in shock that his last jump was enough to see him to the top of the podium. Cuban Juan Migue Echevarria finished with silver after injurying himself on an earlier jump, he tried one last time to top Miltiadis but came up hobbling before reaching the sand. Maykel Masso, also Cuban, had the third best jump and will go home with bronze.

Thompson Herah in running for 100m/200m double

Elaine Thompson Herah (JAM) made no mistake in her heat. The 100m gold medalist never put the pedal to the metal, but made no mistakes and settled for third, with plent of gas in the tank. Canadian Crystal Emmanuel (22.74) and GB's Beth Dobbin finished ahead of the Jamaican

Jackson to miss the 200m final

Big news from the 200m women's heats, as 100m bronze medalist Shericka Jackson  (JAM) is out of the final after failing to qualify by a mere 0.004 behind Dalia Kaddari. The heat was taken by Bahaman Anthonique Strachan

Her busy slate started on friday, when she qualified for tonight's 5000m final, and briefly before the finals she will start her quest for gold in the 1500m qualifiers. A jam packed day for Tokyo's busiest athlete.

The Americans took a tight first set in the opener of the beach volleyball round of 16. They are a set away for the quarters, but have got off to a slow start to the second set, down 4-0

The countdown is on

Day 10 is set to get started in the next 10 minutes, and we will hit the volleyball court get things underway. Cuba will take on USA in the beach volleyball round of 16, while Serbia and South Korea will kick things off in the preliminary rounds on the hard court.

China continute to lead the gold medal count, but Team USA is leading the total medal count, and the hosts are tied with Australia for third with 31 total medals.
