The Green Bay Packers and the Houston Texans get their preseason underway when the pair meet at Lambeau Field on Saturday evening, which could see an interesting battle of the rookies at the quarterback position.

Packers: All eyes on Jordan Love

With Packers QB stalwart Aaron Rodgers sitting this one out, all eyes will be on the franchise’s 2020 first-round draft pick Jordan Love, who will make his first appearance in since the 2019 Senior Bowl over 18 months ago.

This preseason will be an important opportunity for Love to show the Packers fans what he’s about, and head coach Matt LaFleur has said the Utah State graduate will play the majority of the game vs. Houston as he looks to kick-start the rookie’s development ahead of the 2021 NFL regular season.

“We’re always trying to put our guys in great position to go out there and we want them to be successful but, at the same time, I know there’s that balance of trying to get too cute or whatever in terms of what we’re going to throw out there,” LaFleur said. “Certainly, I feel like there’s enough all-purpose plays within our plan that we feel good about that he can go out and execute at a high level.”

Texans: 2021 draft pick Mills ready to step up

With first-choice QB Deshaun Watson, who is currently embroiled in a sexual assault scandal, listed as fourth on the Texans’ depth chart, head coach David Culley could also opt to play a rookie in 2021 third-round pick Davis Mills, who has had his ups and downs in training camp. Although the 22-year-old will not allow himself to dwell on some gaping errors made at camp as he looks ahead to his NFL debut.

"One of the things I've always tried to pride myself in is that I'm a confident person, and you kind of have to be a quarterback,” he said ahead of the game “You can't let those little mistakes faze you. The biggest thing on my mind is the next play, and that's the only thing that matters.”

Last year’s losing NFC Championship finalists, the Packers will be looking towards going all the way to the Super Bowl this postseason as they go in search of their first Vince Lombardi Trophy since 2011. These teams previously have met on five occasions, with the Packers winning four and the Texans once. The last meeting between the two was in last year’s regular season in October 2020, with the Packers claiming a 35-20 victory.
