The American defender made his Bundesliga debut in Dortmund’s 3-1 victory over Arminia after he came on as a substitute in the 88th minute.
The future is bright and promising for the United States men’s national team. Another player made his debut in one of Europe’s top flight leagues on Saturday and this is good news for USMNT head coach Gregg Berhlater.
Maloney to commit to the USMNT
Lennard Maloney made his debut in the Bundesliga in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 road win against Arminia. He came on as a substitute in the 88th minute replacing Mats Hummels. The 22-year-old is German-American and he has played his entire career in Germany.
He spent six years in the youth academy of FC Union Berlin and in August 2020 he joined Dortmund on a free transfer. He has been playing for Borussia Dortmund II since then and on 20 March scored his first goal in the 2-nil win against SV Lippstadt 08.
At the international level Maloney has played for the U18 and U19 Germany youth national teams, but he accepted the call up of the U20 United States in 2018. Since then he has expressed his desire to play for the USMNT.
