Gervonta Davis manages tough win over Isaac Cruz, retains WBA lightweight title
Gervonta Davis managed to hold on to his secondary WBA lightweight title after a difficult unanimous decision win over challenger Isaac Cruz.
Gervonta Davis had an impressive 96% knockout record coming into Sunday’s match, but his win against challenger Isaac Cruz was much less than spectacular. The American managed a close unanimous decision victory over “Pitbull”, retaining his WBA lightweight title.
It was the first time “Tank” had ever gone 12 rounds, as the only other decision win in his career was a six-rounder in his early days as a pro.
Davis had his promoter and mentor Floyd Mayweather in his corner, but the powerful knockout punch that made the 27-year-old famous was nowhere to be seen.
Other fight stories:
Davis' hand injury
“Tank” hurt his left hand and this became apparent in the sixth round- the southpaw was practically fighting with one arm for the second half of the match. The 23-year-old Cruz meanwhile took note of the injury and kept up the pressure.
The judges gave a final tally of 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113. The win by decision signaled an end to Davis’ 16-match knockout streak, although he remains undefeated.
After such a close and shaky victory, Davis was not exactly in the best mood to talk about a rematch. When asked if there would be repeat contest, he replied, “Hell no.”
A star is born
Cruz (22-2-1) meanwhile appeared to be in good spirits despite his loss, and said he was open to a rematch if the fans want one.
It was the first time for Cruz to fight for a world title, and he got the opportunity when he replaced Rolando Romero who had to step down a month before the bout because of allegations of sexual assault.
The Mexican was a big underdog before Sunday, but his ability to push Davis to the limit showed that he is now a major contender in boxing’s lightweight division.
