The final round of 16 games at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations take place on 26 January and the first clash pits former champions Ivory Coast against Egypt. The Elephants have won the Cup of Nations twice, in 1992 and 2015, while the Pharaohs have lifted the trophy on seven occasions. (1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010). Led by Liverpool forward Mo Salah, Egypt went into the tournament among the favourites but made very hard work of the group stage and have hardly looked inspiring, requiring the Egyptian King’s intervention to rescue their campaign against Guinea-Bissau before Mohamed Abdelmonem embellished their record in the final group game.

Still, Egypt have only scored twice in their last five outings and Ivory Coast will fancy their options after battering their way through Group E unbeaten, defeating defending champions Algeria into the bargain. Sebastián Haller has yet to translate his club form into goals for the Elephants, the prolific Ajax striker whetting his whistle just the once in the group stage, but the opposite is true of Nicolas Pépé, who has thrown off his Arsenal shackles to find the net twice in Cameroon. Wilfried Zaha completes a front line who will give Egypt plenty to counter at the back, where Carlos Queiroz is still without first-choice right back Akram Tawfik, who has been ably deputized for by Ahmed Abou El Fotouh.

The winners of the match will go on to face Morocco in the quarterfinals.
