Gio Reyna ready to return against Bayer Leverkusen
The 19-year-old has reached full fitness after suffering a hamstring injury last September. Since then he has missed 25 games for Borussia Dortmund.
The road to recovery has been very long for Gio Reyna. The suffered a hamstring injury while on duty with the United States men’s national team during the World Cup qualifying in September. Since then he has missed 25 games for Borussia Dortmund with other setbacks along the way.
Ready to return
Now back at full fitness, the United States international will almost be like a new ‘signing’ for Dortmund. Reyna could make his triumphal return to the pitch at home for the Bundesliga side on 6 February against Bayer Leverkusen. Borussia Dortmund’s manager, Marco Rose, spoke highly of the 19-year-old and gave an update about his status prior to the match.
“Gio is almost like a new signing for the second half of the season. He had an excellent start to the season in the summer and unfortunately we missed him for a long time. We hope that he now tolerates the strain in training as well,” he said.
Borussia Dortmund uploaded a video in their social media accounts that showed Reyna in full team training and going one-on-one with defender Matt Hummels. The United States men’s national team midfielder has scored two goals in five appearances with Dortmund this season.
Marco Rose talked about Reyna’s position on the field
“In 4-3-3 he has already played very well. He can help us in midfield as an eight and also on the wing, although he's not a classic winger and tends to move into the center from there. He is characterized by his very fine sense of which spaces he has to move into and where he can turn up between the opposing lines. The further up the field he plays, the more dangerous he becomes.”
