Gio Reyna returns in Borussia Dortmund’s defeat

It took Gio Reyna 153 days to recover from a hamstring injury suffered during the September international break while on duty with the United States men’s national team. The 19-year-old finally reached full fitness and made his return in Borussia Dortmund’s 5-2 defeat at home against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

Bittersweet return for Reyna

The United States international came on in the second half when the team managed by Marco Rose was losing 5-1. Reyna replaced Thorgan Hazard in the 60th minute of the match and he seemed to lack rhythm due to the four months he was absent recovering from his hamstring injury.

The United States international was a regular starter at the beginning of the season and it is expected that he returns to a more prominent role in the near future. Gio Reyna should start seeing more minutes in the upcoming Bundesliga and Europa League matches.

So far this season the teenager has scored two goals and provided one assist in six appearances across all competitions. Borussia Dortmund will have a whole week to recover from this loss and prepare for the game against Union Berlin next Sunday.
