He posted a video to Instagram, with the caption, “My chapter may have closed on the field, but my story is unfinished. Can’t wait for the next one. Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey!”
Whitworth: Amazing staying power
The 40-year old ends his professional football career after an accomplished run that was capped by a Super Bowl victory last month. He was also named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2021 for his outstanding work both on and off the field.
The two-time first-team All-Pro has been impressive for his career longevity in a position that takes a lot of battering. At 40, Whitworth holds the distinction of being the oldest tackle in the history of the league. He is also the oldest offensive lineman to play at a championship and hoist the Lombardi trophy.

Whitworth's two teams
Whitworth played college football at LSU, and was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft. He stayed with Cincinnati for eleven years, where he became a three-time Pro Bowler.
He then moved to the Rams as one of the free agents signed on with Sean McVay as head coach, and there he added another Pro Bowl to his belt. The left tackle assumed a leadership role in his new team, being voted team captain in each of the five years he spent with them.
Whitworth started 71 out of 81 regular season games with Los Angeles, and 235 games in total over his 16 years in the league. His last game as a pro footballer was the Rams’ 23-20 victory over the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.
