Trevor Story reaches agreement with Red Sox

The biggest name free agent still on the free agent block, Trevor Story and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a six-year, $140 million contract

According to ESPN, the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement to pick up Trevor Story on a contract worth $140 million over six years.

With Xander Bogaerts entrenched in the Boston shortstop position, the move will likely mean a shift over to second base for Story. Sharing a middle infield doesn’t worry Bogaerts though, calling Story one of "my top five shortstops that I like."

"I play baseball. I'm not at the front office or making those type of decisions," says Bogaerts. "But he is a great player. So that's all I got to say. If you brought in someone like that, it will help out the team."

With the shortstop free-agent field saturated, Story has perhaps had a more difficult time standing out. Corey Seager and Carlos Correa generated such a media frenzy that the two-time All Star Story seemed a little lost in the fog.

Having played half of his games at Coors Field might have been a worry for some. The high-altitude Rockies provides for a ball that carries just that little bit further. Story's road numbers are certainly lower than his home stats, but even with the fears of a skew, the Red Sox are confident that he carries power.

Story hit 37 homers in 2018, 35 in 2019, 11 during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, and 24 in 2021. In 2019, Story reached 100 career homers in 448 games, faster than any other shortstop ever.

With the addition of Story, Boston’s lineup should look something like this:

  1. Kiké Hernández, CF

  2. Story, 2B

  3. Rafael Devers, 3B

  4. Bogaerts, SS

  5. J.D. Martinez, DH
  6.
Alex Verdugo, LF

  7. Bobby Dalbec, 1B

  8. Jackie Bradley Jr., RF

  9. Christian Vázquez, C

The addition of Trevor Story to their lineup positions the Red Sox to have a better chance to compete in an already loaded American League East.
