Serena Williams denies that her father was a villain
The winner of 23 Grand Slam single titles said that the movie King Richard gave the world a different perception of how her dad raised them when she was young.
King Richard was released in 2021 and it is a movie that tells the story of how Venus and Serena Williams started in the sport of tennis and how their father played a key role in their success. The Williams’ sisters have executive producer credits for the film and American actor Will Smith played the part of Richard, a role that won him an Oscars over the weekend.
For many years, it was believed that Richard Williams was a ‘bad influence’ on Venus and Serena, but the movie that came out last year helped portray a different narrative. The intention of the Williams’ sister was to show what their dad did for them and how he helped them achieve success early in life through the sport of tennis.

The interview was done a few days prior to the 2022 Oscars in Hollywood, California and both sisters were very proud when they saw the movie for the first time.
"It was important for us to tell the truth and the protection that my dad had around myself and my sister and our family together... It was my dad. It was my mom, it was our family,” said Serena Williams.
