Update:

Ben Affleck says his chemistry with The Accountant 2 co-star Jon Bernthal is a major reason why he’d be open to making more films in the series.

“Unexpected comedy duo”

Out in U.S. movie theaters since April 25, the action-thriller sequel sees Affleck - who also produces - return as Christian Wolff, a neurodivergent accountant who helps criminal organizations to launder money.

As in 2016’s The Accountant, Bernthal plays Christian’s estranged hitman brother Braxton - but The Accountant 2 gives him more screen time alongside Affleck than in the original, to the benefit of the film.

Mashable’s Kristy Puchko describes the follow-up as “rip-roaringly funny, thanks to this unexpected comedy duo”, while The Guardian’s Adrian Horton agrees that the movie’s “chief pleasure” is watching “two macho actors chopping it up as brothers who don’t know how to be brothers”.

Speaking as The Accountant 2 was released late last week, Affleck said his rapport with Bernthal was “the great joy of the movie for me.”

“I can’t imagine a more fun, more rewarding experience”

That was the real pleasure,” the 52-year-old told USA Today’s Erin Johnson. “Like, if you’re lucky, you get to work in this business, you get to do what you love and […] put food on the table for your family.

“And if you’re really lucky, you get to work with people that you really like and admire and who make you better. All those things were true in this case.

“And it’s what makes me think I’d like to do more of these. I just can’t imagine a more fun, more rewarding experience.”

Affleck added: “In my experience, when movies work the best, it’s because you’ve got sort of fertile ground for something to happen, but you don’t know exactly what it is. You always have the sense that there’s some sort of lightning in a bottle that you can catch.

And that’s what it felt like every day [during filming]. It was like: Something special might happen here.”

Bernthal also spoke enthusiastically about his experience of working alongside Affleck. “Every day you’d go in and, you know, Ben is like telling these stories that will blow your mind,” he told USA Today.

“Like unbelievable stories about these films and these people and these things that he’s been through. And it’s unbelievable what it does to a set.”

What is The Accountant 2 about?

Directed by Gavin O’Connor, who was also at the helm of the first film, The Accountant 2 brings Christian and Braxton together to solve the puzzle posed by the murder of a Treasury Department chief.

“In partnership with U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), they uncover a deadly conspiracy, becoming targets of a ruthless network of killers who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried,” says the film’s distributor, Amazon MGM.
