Update:

Actor Bradley Whitford, known for his roles in The West Wing and The Handmaid’s Tale, appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night. During the interview, Whitford did not hold back in his criticism of President Trump.

Post-Roe and The Handmaid’s Tale

The conversation began with a discussion of the latest season of The Handmaid’s Tale, which is currently airing on Hulu, with new episodes dropping every Tuesday through May 27, 2025. Whitford and Colbert joked that some of the dystopian elements of the series no longer feel so far-fetched, especially in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which significantly curtailed abortion rights in over half of the US states.

In the series, “Handmaidens” are women known to be fertile, who are forced to live with powerful commanders. There, they are subjected to ritualized rape, compelled to carry children for elite couples, and then transferred to another household to repeat the cycle. Whitford, who plays Commander Lawrence, noted the chilling parallels between the show’s fictional world and current political developments.

Later in the interview, the conversation turned to international relations, particularly the deteriorating relationship between the United States and Canada. Whitford expressed concern over President Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian imports not covered by the USMCA trade agreement. He also criticized the president’s repeated remarks suggesting that Canada would be better off as the 51st U.S. state. Trump has referred to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau” on multiple occasions—comments widely viewed in Canada as deeply disrespectful to the country’s leadership, government, and national sovereignty.

Turning back to the show, Colbert noted that in this season, the Canadian government, who in the show host many American refugees, turn on the US, and the migrants who had sought safety in the country. But Whitford wuiqkcly brings its back to our reality, responding “Do you know what an asshole to piss off Canadians?”
