Update:

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is not only extremely popular, it’s also both one of the most affordable for beginners.

And one of the most curious aspects about Pokémon TCG is the rarity and price of some of the cards. A crazy collecting game in which vast amounts of money - in some cases, several millions of dollars have been paid for extremely exclusive items.

Logan Paul sets new Pokémon trading card record

For example the Pikachu Illustrator trading card for which Logan Paul paid a record $5.275 million for in April 2022 is the best known of all, but many do not understand the perfect 10 rating it received from the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) - the largest and most respected third-party authentication and grading company in the world.

The Pikachu Illustrator card was given out to 39 winners of the 1997 and 1998 Pokémon illustration contests which makes it incredibly rare. On top of that only 23 have been certified by the PSA, and out of them, eight have been awarded a PSA Grade 9 and just one has been given a PSA rating of 10, which means it is in mint condition.

However, that perfect, mint rating is something which many people can’t understand. In collecting circles, and particularly with top end, sought-after and rare items, even the smallest of details count.

Paul’s card certainly isn’t mint. It has imperfect edges and is slightly crooked, and had previously been rated 9 by the PSA, so quite a few users were very surprised to see it had been upgraded.

What makes a perfect, grade 10 Pokémon card?

The PSA has a 10-point system which it uses to grade all collectible cards. A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card, which means it will have four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus and full original gloss. It must be free of staining of any kind, but allowances may be made for slight printing imperfections - as long as it doesn’t impair the overall appeal of the card.

A PSA Mint 9 is a superb condition card that exhibits only one of the following minor flaws: a very slight wax stain on reverse, a minor printing imperfection or slightly off white borders which may have become discolored through age.

The lowest numerical grade given by the PSA is 1 which means their condition is poor/fair. Grade 1 cards have several defects which may have advanced to such a serious stage that the overall visual appeal of the card has nearly vanished in its entirety. It may be torn, missing pieces, exhibit major creasing or contain extreme discoloration or dirtiness.

Logan Paul’s card still holds the record for being the most expensive, according to Dicebreaker. The second highest price paid for a rare Pokémon card is $420,000, which is what a 1999 First Edition Shadowless Holographic Charizard card fetched at auction in March 2022. Only 121 copies of the card have been rated as Gem Mint 10 by the PSA.
