From winning the Golden Globe to celebrating his 80th birthday at McDonald’s: The new life of Tom Selleck

The American actor, famous for his role as Magnum PI, is living a quiet life away from the spotlight after the end of Blue Bloods, but could a return be on the cards?

Update:

Tom Selleck, the renowned American actor, turned 80 on Wednesday and marked the occasion in a simple, understated way—by visiting one of the most iconic fast-food chains in the United States: McDonald’s. To celebrate the milestone, he treated himself to a small indulgence, photographed picking up his order at the restaurant’s drive-thru before enjoying his meal alone in his truck.

Best known for his iconic role in Magnum, P.I.—which earned him a Golden Globe in 1985 for Best Actor in a Television Drama Series— Selleck has never been one to make a fuss over birthdays. In a recent interview with Parade, he admitted as much: “I’ll probably have dinner with my brother, my sister, and Jillie. We’ll go out, have a nice meal, keep it quiet, and not make a big deal out of it.”

Critical of Blue Bloods cancellation

Selleck now has more free time following CBS’s decision to cancel Blue Bloods in November 2023. The long-running police drama had been on the air for 14 consecutive seasons, but its abrupt ending seems to have left the actor dissatisfied, as he made clear in comments to TV Insider last month.

“The hardest part for me is that we had a family on Blue Bloods—both on screen and off. They’re my friends. I miss them. It’s going to take me a while to adjust,” he said. He also took the opportunity to express frustration with CBS over how the network handled the show’s conclusion.

“If you told a TV network, ‘Here’s a show that you can put in your worst time slot, and it will still guarantee you Friday night wins for the next 15 years,’ they’d never believe it,” he pointed out.

Despite his disappointment, Selleck made it clear that he has no plans to retire from acting just yet. He admitted that he would love to take part in a Western directed by Taylor Sheridan.
