An Academy first for Pearce

Ahead of these 2025 awards, Pearce received his first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Brutalist. This period film, directed by Brady Corbet, has garnered significant attention, earning ten Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. Pearce’s portrayal of a wealthy industrialist who transforms the life of architect László Tóth (played by Brody) has been praised for its depth and nuance.

However, Pearce remains modest about his chances. In a recent interview, he expressed skepticism about winning, suggesting that fellow nominee Kieran Culkin is the favorite to take home the award. Culkin has already secured wins at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Critics' Choice Awards for his role in A Real Pain, making him the frontrunner in the category.

Before this Oscar nod, Pearce’s accolades included a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Mildred Pierce (2011) and a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble cast of The King’s Speech (2010). Despite these honors, the Academy had not previously recognized his work with a nomination.

As the stage opens for the 97th Academy Awards, Pearce’s fans and industry peers eagerly await the outcome. Whether or not he secures the Oscar, his nomination alone is a testament to his compelling performance he delivered in The Brutalist. Shame it took them this long.
