Martha Stewart becomes oldest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model at 81

The 81-year-old discussed how she prepared for the shoot during an appearance on ‘Today’.

Update:
The 81-year-old discussed how she prepared for the shoot during an appearance on ‘Today’.

Martha Stewart can add the title of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model to her list of amazing accomplishments.

The 81-year-old is one of several stars to grace the cover of the magazine’s 2023 issue, becoming the oldest model to ever appear on the front of the annual issue.

Stewart was all smiles as she revealed the cover shot on Monday’s episode of the ‘Today’ show.

“I like that picture,” said Stewart, who posed in the Dominican Republic for the shoot and appears in a total of 10 looks.

“I’m sort of shaking. It’s odd to go to an island and change into nine different bathing suits in one day in front of all those people, and it turned out OK.”

She also told the magazine that her appearance on the cover was “historic”.

“When I heard that I was going to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, I thought, ‘Oh, that’s pretty good, I’m going to be the oldest person I think ever on a cover of Sports Illustrated,’” Stewart said.

“And I don’t think about age very much, but I thought that this is kind of historic.”

While Stewart noted that being on the cover at her age was a challenge, she made it clear she isn’t bothered by the “whole aging thing”.

“To be on the cover (at) my age was a challenge. And I think I met the challenge,” said Stewart.

“I think that all of us should think about good living, successful living and not about aging. The whole aging thing is so boring.”

How Stewart prepared for the cover shoot

As for how Stewart prepared for the shoot, she says she took her diet and exercise seriously.

“I didn’t starve myself, but I didn’t eat any bread or pasta for a couple of months,” she told ‘Today’.

“I went to Pilates every other day and that was great; I’m still going to Pilates every other day ‘cause it’s so great. And I just, I live a clean life anyway — good diet and good exercise and healthy skincare and all of that stuff.”

She also gave credit to her own mother, who wore bikinis her whole life ever after having six children.

“My genes are good,” she said.
