Update:

Hollywood is about to witness one of its most ambitious films ever as Christopher Nolan brings Homer’s The Odyssey to the big screen. Known for going all out on set, Nolan has even managed to surprise some of his star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, who described the project to Empire as “the best experience of my career.”

Damon returns to work with Nolan

In the film, Damon plays Odysseus, chronicling his journey home after the Trojan War. The actor says he is thrilled to reunite with the Oscar-winning director after “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer.” Damon promises that “The Odyssey” will be “exactly what you want of a summer movie.”

The actor doesn’t hold back when praising the production, calling it his career’s most memorable experience. With ambitions to out-epic anything audiences have seen, the film boasts a breathtaking ensemble cast, including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Elliot Page, among others.

“The Odyssey’s” epic scale and breathtaking adventures

Damon recalls his first glimpse of the Trojan horse on set. “I can say, without hyperbole, that it was the best experience of my career. I saw the horse on the beach and I was just like, ‘Fuck.’ It was just so cool. We were shooting that horse scene next week, so I go, ‘How are you going to do it?’ And Chris goes, ‘I don’t know. We’ll just get in there and figure it out.’”

The film promises a journey packed with iconic adventures across stunning locations including Italy, Morocco, Scotland, and Greece. Damon says audiences can expect everything from existential moments with the Sirens to high-stakes chases away from a Cyclops. “If you’re going to have an existential crisis as you pass the Sirens and you’re lashed to a mast, it’s there. If it says you’re running for your life from a Cyclops, you’re going to run for your life. Chris doesn’t hide the ball,” he said.

What makes Odysseus so special

Christopher Nolan also shared his take on what makes Odysseus such a compelling character. “Emily Wilson’s translation begins: ‘Tell me about a complicated man.’ His genius, his cleverness, his inventiveness, that’s what drew me in. He’s not just a soldier. He’s an extraordinary strategist, extremely sharp,” Nolan said.

When does “The Odyssey” premiere?

“The Odyssey” is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, promising an epic cinematic experience for audiences around the world.
