Neither Poison Ivy nor Vicki Vale, Scarlett Johansson’s role in ‘The Batman II’ is revealed

Johansson's role in 'The Batman II' begins with speculation about the presence of one of the great villains of the Batman universe.

La transformación física de Scarlett Johansson

With the script already in James Gunn’s hands, director Matt Reeves had one last surprise up his sleeve for The Batman II: Scarlett Johansson.

Ever since her casting was confirmed, speculation swirled about which Gotham villain she might embody. Poison Ivy seemed the obvious choice. But according to insider Jeff Sneider, Johansson’s role is something entirely different — and far more unexpected.

Johansson as Gilda Dent

Sneider reports that Johansson will play Gilda Dent, a character who first appeared in Detective Comics #66 as the fiancée — and later wife — of Harvey Dent, the man who eventually becomes Two-Face. In the comics, Gilda doesn’t just stand by her husband; she becomes entangled in his criminal world, playing a pivotal role in the acclaimed Batman: The Long Halloween storyline by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.

Two-Face rumors heat up

Naturally, this revelation has fueled speculation that Two-Face will be the central villain of The Batman II. Over the weekend, rumors even linked Brad Pitt to the role, a casting that would have rivaled Johansson’s in shock value. But those reports were quickly shot down, leaving Pitt out of the running — at least for now. Still, Harvey Dent’s presence in the sequel looks all but certain.

Joker’s return on the Horizon

One thing fans can count on: Colin Farrell’s Penguin won’t be the main antagonist this time. Farrell himself confirmed his role will be more of a cameo. That has strengthened theories that Barry Keoghan’s Joker will return in a much bigger capacity, after only briefly appearing in the closing moments of the first film.

Release date

Warner Bros. has set The Batman II for release on October 1, 2027.
