Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth divorcing: a look at their relationship history

Actress Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth have announced they are divorcing after 12 years of marriage. The two took to Instagram on Friday, March 24 to announce in a joint statement that they will be separating.

According to the statement, the divorce was a mutual decision and they are going to continue to prioritize the son they share together. They also ask for respect and privacy regarding the decision.

“We have some personal news to share... It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the two said.

“We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”

The statement concludes with, “Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter,” they added. “These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time.”

Continuing to be close friends

According to a source for People Magazine, the two are still best friends and intend to co-parent together. They say the two hope to make the transition as smooth as possible for their family.

“They really are the best of friends and this is such an amicable decision. They are so committed to co-parenting together. They are invested in their whole family and making this as smooth as possible for everyone,” the source alleges.

Relationship history

Witherspoon and Toth initially announced their engagement in December 2010 and they tied the knot in March 2011 in a casual ceremony on their Ranch in Ojai, California. They share one 10-year-old son, Tennessee James, together.

Witherspoon however also shares two kids with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, a daughter named Ava, and a son named Deacon, and both are now adults. The two got engaged in 1998 after meeting on the set of ‘Cruel Intentions.’

Over five years later the two announced their separation in October 2006. At the time, rumors circulated that Phillippe had an affair with actor and singer Abbie Cornish, which was later shut down by Witherspoon.

Later in 2010, Witherspoon explained that her co-parenting relationship with her ex was ‘great.’ In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, she went on to say that “things are great,” between the two.

“It is so important as divorced parents to keep that connection. It makes the kids feel better that the parents are interacting. We go to all the school events together, and we’re there for each other.”
