Selena Gomez finally responds to Karla Sofia Gascon (‘Emilia Perez’): “Some of the magic is gone”
The last leading actress in the movie to have remained silent about the controversy surrounding Karla Sofía Gascón has now spoken.

The saga surrounding Emilia Pérez will go down as one of the most bizarre pre-Oscar controversies in recent memory. The uproar over the film erupted after resurfaced racist tweets posted years ago by Karla Sofía Gascón. In response, Netflix swiftly removed the actress from its promotional campaign. Her co-stars have also weighed in: Zoe Saldaña admitted feeling “very sad,” and now, the last of the film’s three lead actresses has spoken out – Selena Gomez.
Selena Gomez, disappointed but standing by the film
“Some of the magic is gone, but I choose to remain proud of what I’ve done. I’m grateful and live without regrets,” the actress said during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Gomez insists she would make this film “over and over again if I could”—she has absolutely no regrets about being part of Emilia Pérez. Despite the controversy, the film’s artistic merit alone was enough to make it the most-nominated film at the 2025 Oscars.
Meanwhile, Gascón has withdrawn from the public eye after clashing with director Jacques Audiard, who was harshly critical, even calling her “self-destructive.” Audiard himself has also sparked backlash with incendiary comments about the Spanish language, which he dismissed as a language of ‘developing countries and poor people.’
