‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ sees big numbers on opening day
The video game movie broke records across the world.
‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ saw big opening day numbers in box offices around the world, collecting $31.7 million domestically and $34.7 million internationally, bringing its total day-one earnings to $66.4 million.
The long-awaited video game movie based on the Nintendo franchise of the same name features the voice acting talents of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black and Seth Rogen, and many more.
The top international markets for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’
‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ topped animated launch days in 11 markets, including Mexico, China, and Spain.
Mexico led with $5.9 million, becoming the biggest debut for a Universal movie, and the second-biggest animation opening day after ‘Toy Story 4′.
Next, China came in with $4.7 million, becoming the biggest opening day for a Hollywood movie in the country since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and so far, is the second-biggest opening day for a studio title in 2023.
Germany saw an opening day gross of $2.8 million, becoming Universal’s best opening day for that market, as well as the best opening day for an animated movie. The movie has had the best opening day since ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ in 2019.
The Spanish audience saw opening day numbers of $2.2 million, the country’s biggest animation opening day ever. Ticket admissions were more than ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ and ‘Doctor Strange 2′, becoming the biggest opening day since the pandemic started.
France came in at $2.1 million, the second-best animation opening to occur in the month of April, after ‘Ice Age 2′.
The movie saw the second-biggest opening day in the countries of Central America, following ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in 2019, more than doubling the numbers for both ‘Minions’ and ‘Despicable Me’ in the Central American market.
Other notable countries were Italy with $1.4 million, and Taiwan and Australia tied with $1.1 million.
‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ will likely achieve projections
With the numbers on opening day, it’s expected that ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ will earn its projected earning of $92 million over the weekend, and $141 million in the first five days of its release.
Friday onwards, the movie will expand across another 70 markets, including Japan, home of Nintendo, who created the ‘Mario’ video game franchise in 1981.
