The big difference: what the film is based on
The category of the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay refers to any film production that the screenwriters write completely from scratch, based on a specific idea and without adapting to any previous material.
The five nominees for Original Screenplay are:
- Anora
- The Brutalist
- A Real Pain
- September 5
- The Substance
The five nominees in the Adapted Screenplay are:
- A Complete Unknown
- Conclave
- Emilia Pérez
- Nickel Boys
- Sing Sing
Meanwhile, in the Oscar category for Best Adapted Screenplay, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences refers to any film production that, according to the rules, is directly inspired by one or more previously established works, based on a source such as a book, a play, a musical, or even a video game.
