The 23rd edition of the BET awards is almost upon us. The ceremony, which was established by the Black Entertainment network in 2001, will give us another chance to celebrate black entertainers, as well as other minorities, from the worlds of music, film, sport and philanthropy in particular.

How many BET awards will be handed out?

More than 20 awards will be presented, many of which have been on the go since the first edition 22 years ago (Video of the Year, Viewer’s Choice Award, Best Actor, Best Actress), while others have been added as the event has grown and tastes have changed (Album of the Year, Best Movie, Best International Act).

Who have won the most BET awards?

In the history of the show, Beyoncé has won more awards (33) than anyone else and has again received four nominations in 2023, including Album of the Year for Renaissance and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist.

Chris Brown, second on the all-time list with 18 wins, has also been dominated four times, but third-placed Drake (15) is this year’s top nominee and could win in seven different categories, Album of the Year and Best Male HipHop Artist included.

Tennis legend Serena Williams is the most successful sportsperson in the history of the awards, winning 12 times, and has again been nominated for Sportswoman of the Year. NBA stars Stephen Curry and LeBron James are in the male category, along with NFL duo Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, who faced off in the SuperBowl.

When and where will the 2023 BET awards be held?

The 2023 awards will be held on Sunday 25 June at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, with the event starting at 8pm ET. A whole host of performers have been announced, including Ja Rule, GloRilla and Tyga but, with less than a week to go, we still don’t know who will be hosting yet.
