A flight attendant reveals the common mistake many passengers make after boarding: “We’re trying to counteract it”
Placing small bags and backpacks in the top compartments takes up space from large suitcases.

A Lufthansa flight attendant has warned about a mistake that nearly all passengers make when boarding a plane. Although it may seem harmless, it complicates luggage organization and can slow down the boarding process.
According to the crew member, many travelers place their small backpacks and purses in the overhead bins. This prevents other passengers from storing their larger carry-on suitcases in those compartments, which are specifically designed for bulkier items.
In an interview with Frankfurter Rundschau, flight attendant Maike Herder addressed the issue. “Many people do it incorrectly. We’re trying to counteract the problem with announcements,” she told the publication.

When this happens, there are two possible solutions, and both delay boarding for everyone. The first is to rearrange the bags, meaning smaller items are removed from the overhead bins to make room for larger suitcases. The second option is to check the larger bags into the cargo hold.
It is a simple gesture, but it can save a significant amount of time for both passengers and crew. Placing only larger carry-on bags in the overhead bins helps keep the aisle clear and also reduces disputes over limited space.
