A worker gets $44,000 for changing a light bulb twice a year at 1,500 feet above sea level: “Dedication is very necessary”
The danger is an important factor in understanding why the pay is so high.

There are jobs that aren’t for everyone, and one job in particular is quite recognized worldwide, not because of its excessive complexity but because of the danger involved, which is rewarded with a very high salary. This is the case of Kevin Schmidt, whose job is to change a light bulb twice a year.
Big bucks
Schmidt receives nearly $45,000 per year for replacing this light bulb. However, the unique aspect of this job is its high level of danger, given that he has to install the bulb nearly 1,500-feet on a telecommunications tower. Although the job itself has important safety measures, it is a job that entails a lot of danger, hence the high salary. Typically, the bulb is replaced every six months if there are no setbacks, so Schmidt receives about $22,000 for each bulb change.
Given the high risk of climbing at almost 1,500 feet, Schmidt has an extensive list of safety measures in place to prevent any mishaps. Schmidt slowly ascends the tower’s stairs with a built-in harness that he clicks into place as he climbs. Despite the unusual nature of the job, Schmidt has stated on occasion how he’s made it a routine and often stops to take in the views or send a photo to his wife.
The Importance of That Light Bulb
These antenna towers not only serve as communications equipment, but are also used for air traffic. The light emitted by the bulbs located at the top of these towers alerts aircraft that there are high-rise towers in that direction. This helps prevent accidents. Schmidt’s role in changing these light bulbs is very important, but he hasn’t always been dedicated to it. Before taking on this role, he worked in maintenance, inspections, and material replacement, even managing entire offices. “Dedication is very necessary, because you don’t want someone who’s just in it for the money; you want someone who works hard,” he said.
