Curving your tongue may be related to your IQ: these are the associated skills

The ability to form your tongue into different shapes isn’t something everyone has, and it may actually be a sign of intelligence.

Can you make your tongue into a U shape? What about a cloverleaf? Any others? If you can curve your tongue, although it may seem simple to you, you actually possess a skill that not everyone does. And it might mean you’re actually a genius.

Just kidding - but it could be an indicator of your IQ, according to some experts in psychology. It can also reveal aspects of your personality, creativity, and cognitive development.

What the ability to curve your tongue really means

The ability to perform the movement of the tongue that allows it to form complex figures is mostly determined by genetics, usually inherited by one or both parents. But some environmental factors are also at play. The more a child is exposed to certain coordination practices, the more they may develop skills like tongue curling, where they may not have before possessed them. The skill itself is linked to creativity, extroversion, and adaptability.

The ability to curl the tongue into a U shape represents both muscular flexibility as well as the ability to critically analyze. People who can do this tend to be reflective and methodical.

While not everyone can form the U shape with their tongue, forming a cloverleaf shape is even more rare. This particular skill demonstrates not only creativity, but agility as well. People with this capability are typically extroverted and easily adapt to different environments.

The science behind this idea is that the ability to master this physical skill comes from the same place in the brain that allows for problem-solving and creative thinking. It is of course, not as I joked earlier. The ability to curl your tongue does not definitively indicate a person’s level of intelligence, but it does offer an interesting perspective into the connection between the mind and the body.

How this knowledge can help psychologists in the future

While this is a fun fact, it’s also a useful one. Having made this realization, more research can be done on the connection of brain plasticity and how it affects people’s cognitive strengths. It can even be used to potentially identify developmental disorders at an earlier age.
