World-famous director David Lynch, who brought projects to our screens such as Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet, has passed away at the age of 78.

Lynch, born on January 20, 1946, in Missoula, Montana, started his career creating short films in the late 1960s.

His debut feature film, the iconic and eccentric Eraserhead (1977), which he wrote and directed, became a cult favourite and paved the way for his breakthrough with The Elephant Man (1980), starring John Hurt.

Dune came four years later in 1984, although his finest work is often cited as Twin Peaks, the ABC mystery drama that captivates fans to this day.

How did David Lynch die?

The four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker was diagnosed with emphysema and sources told Deadline.com that “he was forced to relocate from his house due to the Sunset Fire and then took a turn for the worse.”

“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” a family statement read. “We would appreciate some privacy at this time.

"There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way", it concluded.

A man who broke stylistic barriers and a true visionary of the arts, Lynch received an Honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in the year 2000.
