New findings from rocks inside Jezero Crater add to growing evidence that the Red Planet may once have been habitable.

Discovery on Mars: NASA detects possible signs of microbial life
The search for life beyond our planet remains one of humanity’s greatest scientific goals. Among the many possible destinations, Mars continues to stand out as the leading candidate. The fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest in the solar system, the Red Planet has been studied more extensively than any other world because of geological evidence showing that it once harbored liquid water. Now, NASA’s Perseverance rover has detected complex carbon molecules in Martian rocks, drawing the attention of scientists because they could represent possible signs of ancient microbial life.
The discovery was made in the geological formation known as Bright Angel, along the ancient river channel Neretva Vallis, which carried water into Jezero Crater millions of years ago. The form of carbon identified is known as macromolecular carbon and can originate from living organisms. However, geological processes are also capable of producing the same material, meaning its detection does not constitute proof that life once existed on Mars.

A discovery that suggests Mars may once have been widely habitable
Ashley Murphy, a researcher at the Planetary Science Institute in Arizona, said that macromolecular carbon “can come from biological sources such as fossil organic matter found in microbial mats and coal.”
The Perseverance finding is particularly significant because it marks the discovery of shale containing organic compounds at sites more than 1,860 miles apart. Previous detections were reported by NASA’s Curiosity rover, suggesting that habitable environments and organic compounds may once have been widespread across the Martian surface.
