Does this European country want to “buy” California? The crazy petition that has almost 200,000 signatures

You read that right. The people of a certain European country want to buy California from Donald Trump.

Update:

Take that, Donald. Europe has bitten back at the threats of the United States taking over Greenland by launching its own bid to buy California.

The country in question is Denmark, and more specifically a petition which has quickly gathered up over 200,000 signatures for the nation of Lego, bacon and furniture to stick their flag in the sandy beaches of Santa Monica.

Instead of tackling China, North Korea or Russia, the 47th US President has set off on a crusade to squeeze pressure upon the nation of just under 6 million, a place regularly known as ‘the happiest country on Earth’.

Could Denmark buy California?

No. It will never happen and those in charge of the country have nothing to do with this. But it’s nice to imagine just how funny it would be. The Denmarkification petition has its own website with a live-tracker of how many people have signed. All you need is an email address and you’re good to go.

Let’s Buy California from Trump – Denmark’s Next Big Adventure

Have you ever looked at a map and thought, "You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates." Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality.

Let’s buy California from Donald Trump!

Yes, you heard that right.

California could be ours, and we need your help to make it happen.

Why does Denmark want to buy California?

The website claims it wants California - which would be called ‘New Denmark’ - in order to have more sun, more tech bros, more avocado toast and they also want to rename Disneyland to Hans Christian Andersenland.

The activists behind the petition argue that Trump might sell given his ropey relationship with what he called “the most ruined state in the Union” and they say that they will “throw in a lifetime supply of Danish pastries to sweeten the deal.”

Let’s be real for a second. This is not the Danish government’s attempt to buy California but the fact this website exists perfectly highlights the outrage that Trump has caused to the Danish people for attacking Greenland’s sovereignty.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, told Reuters in December that “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

Donald Trump responded in January affirming that “I think the people [of Greenland] want to be with us. I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world. I think we’ll get Greenland because it has to do with freedom of the world.”
