Don’t do this with your dog after eating, it could have fatal consequences

Make sure your dog enjoys a long, healthy life with the right amount of food and exercise, at the right time.

Make sure your dog enjoys a long, healthy life with the right amount of food and exercise, at the right time.

One of the big questions dog owners ask is when is the best time to take a dog out for a walk? And how many times a day does a dog need to be taken outside to get some exercise?

It’s easy to forget that exercise can quickly tire dogs out - they might need a nap after a long walk, which is something that you should bear in mind. The amount of exercise a dog needs varies depending on breed, size, age... etc.

For example, for a puppy, a short, 10-minute walk two or three times a day should be enough to keep them in shape. Remember that puppies also need to be potty-trained which requires certain consistency in their daily routine.

Puppies need a potty break every two to four hours and in most cases, almost immediately after eating and while adult dogs have more endurance and can hold out longer, it’s always a good idea to structure your dog’s day - making sure it gets the right balance of activity and rest.

Mealtime and going out to get some exercise are two of the most important times in the daily lives of most dogs. When it come to feeding your pet, it’s advisable to make sure they eat two meals a day, giving them a nutritious, well-balanced diet while not overfeeding them.

Why dogs need to rest after eating a meal

After your dog has eaten, it is advised to let them rest and give them time to digest their meal. Immediately after eating is not the right time to take your dog out for a walk in the park. Among the health risks are esophageal disorders, reflux, indigestion and bloating or gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) to give it its technical name,

Bloating is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. It occurs when a dog‘s stomach fills with gas, fluid or food, which can cause food blockages and in the worst cases, cause internal tubes to twist, cutting off blood flow to the stomach and other organs. This can lead to shock, organ damage, and even death if not treated promptly.

When do dogs need a nap?

So after giving your pet dog their favorite meal. Let them after a snooze before taking them out walking. Give your dog at least 30 minutes to an hour to rest after every meal before engaging in any strenuous activity.

Most dogs like to have some kind of routine and will intuitively know when it’s mealtime and when it’s time to head out and explore.
