Update:

California has joined the ever-growing list of states in which residents can add their driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet.

That means users will no longer need to dig deep into their wallets, purses, pockets or handbags when asked to show identification, which they can now do with a quick tap on their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Users can securely store their ID using Apple Wallet and present it using either Face ID or Touch ID at participating business and other locations that accept mobile IDs, which includes TSA checkpoints at airports.

It should be noted, however, that digital IDs aren’t a complete replacement for physical driver’s licenses or state IDs. The downside is that there are still many places in the United States, and indeed abroad, where such digital identification isn’t accepted.

However, they can make your life a little easier, and save you a little time, in places where they are.

States where you can use your ID with Apple Wallet

At present, Apple Wallet’s digital driver’s license and state ID program is available in these 10 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio, Puerto Rico.

The following stages have committed to adopting the program in the near future: Montana, West Virginia, Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah.
