Update:

When a couple decides to take the big step of moving in together, one of the most crucial factors for a healthy relationship is how household responsibilities are divided. A fair balance can make daily life smoother, more enjoyable, and far less stressful for both partners.

That’s the message from Érica Avellaneda, a philologist, theologian, and content creator, who recently posted a viral video on Instagram criticizing the lack of involvement many men show when it comes to household chores.

It’s not normal for a man not to know where things are in his own home, not to know what time his kids’ extracurricular activities are, or even how often the sheets need to be washed,” Avellaneda said.

She stressed that women don’t have any “supernatural power” that makes them magically better at finding things. “The reality is that many men are simply disconnected from the space they live in,” she explained.

Avellaneda pointed out the irony: the same men who can’t find the Tupperware or remember where the towels are often have no trouble rattling off their favorite soccer team’s full lineup, transfer market moves, stats, or even who scored in a final years ago. In her view, it’s not about ability—it’s about interest.

Practical advice for a fairer home

Avellaneda offered concrete tips for couples who want to break this cycle:

  1. Show initiative: Don’t wait to be asked—step in and help.
  2. Pay attention: Notice what’s missing, what’s coming up, and what needs planning.
  3. Practice empathy: Understand that sharing a life means sharing the workload.
  4. Stay consistent: Small, everyday actions build habits over time.

“This isn’t about magic—it’s about willpower, learning, practice, and empathy. It’s time to build a more balanced home where no one is stuck with an endless to-do list while the other lives obliviously,” she concluded.
