FDA recalls meat and sausage products: List of Smith Packing items “off taste and off color”

Close to 20,000 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and sausage were recalled this week. Here are the product details.

Update:

On Tuesday, April 29, the USDA announced that a New York-based meat packer had issued a recall for over 18,972 pounds of ‘ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meats.'

The agency said that the products in question had levels of sodium nitrate that exceeded “the regulatory limit,” and that the company had received numerous complaints from customers over the taste and color of the products, prompting the intervention by the USDA.

As of Tuesday, the agency had not recorded any “adverse reactions due to consumption of these products,” but encouraged anyone who was feeling sick after eating them to contact a healthcare professional.

Which products were covered by the recall?

According to the press release put out by the USDA, the products were sent to retailers in New York, and if one looks at the USDA mark of inspection, they should see the establishment number “EST. 4578” or “P-4578” written inside.
