Looking at a lunar calendar is the way to calculate years according to the cycles of the Moon. With this method you can calculate time following the phases of the Earth’s satellite. Fans of astronomy always look forward to looking at the brightness of the full moon.

The next full moon, taking place on the first full day of summer 2024, is known as the “Strawberry Moon.” The origin of this nickname can be traced to the Algonquin tribe of North America, for whom this moon marked the beginning of the strawberry picking season.

In Europe it is sometimes called the “Rose Moon”, because it signals the beginning of the rose harvest. Another old European nickname is “Honey Moon,” because honey is also often harvested around this period.

When can you see the Strawberry Moon in June 2024?

This astronomical phenomenon can be observed in the U.S. on Friday, June 21, at 9:08 p.m. ET, according to NASA. At that moment, the moon will reach peak illumination.

The name of the cosmic event does not imply that the Moon will appear with a pink tone similar to that of the fruit. However, according to NASA, there is a possibility that the satellite’s hue may be reddish when it rises or sets.

Dates of the next Supermoons

Tonight’s Strawberry Moon represents the change of season from spring to summer. It will not be the last great full moon of the year, since there will be four supermoons coming in 2024.

A supermoon is a full moon that appears larger and brighter than usual. This happens when a full moon coincides with its closest approach to Earth. This phenomenon takes place because the moon’s orbit around Earth is elliptical, meaning there are times when the moon is closer to Earth (perigee) and times when it is farther away (apogee).

The dates of when the supermoons will appear are August 19, September 18, October 17 and November 15, 2024.
