In 2024, 12.2% of babies were given gender-neutral names. Noah, Ezra, Dylan, Avery, and Riley topped the list across both genders.

Gender-neutral names are becoming increasingly popular, as many parents prefer names that allow their child to develop their own identity.

Each year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) publishes a list of the most common baby names based on social security registrations. In 2024, 80 gender-neutral names appeared among the top 1,000 most popular baby names.

What percent of babies were given one of these gender-neutral names?

The names on the Top 1000 list represent around 75 percent of all male births and two-thirds of female births. Names that appear on both the male and female lists account for 12.2 percent of all births. More baby boys were given these names—roughly 7 percent of all births—compared to 4.4 percent of baby girls born in 2024.

Which names were the most popular?

Representing 1.13 percent of all babies born, Noah was the most common name on the gender-neutral list, followed by Ezra (0.50 percent), Dylan (0.42 percent), and Avery (0.39 percent).

For baby girls, the most common names that appeared on both lists were Avery (0.32 percent), Riley (0.26 percent), Eden (0.18 percent), Emery (0.18 percent), and Quinn (0.15 percent).For baby boys, the most popular were Noah (1.10 percent), Ezra (0.48 percent), Dylan (0.40 percent), Logan (0.34 percent), and Carter (0.34 percent).
