He went on a trip with his family and stumbled upon a shining treasure that made him a millionaire: “It was just inches away”

Eight years ago, Kalel Langford’s life changed forever during a family trip to the Crater of Diamonds, located in the town of Murfreesboro, Arkansas.

That day, the teenager discovered a 7.44-carat diamond, valued at nearly $1 million. He found it near a stream – the largest brown diamond found in the park since 1978, according to the official state park website. “It was just a few inches from a stream, surrounded by a bunch of other rocks about the same size,” his father said.

The superhero diamond find

Speaking to local outlets including the Arkansas Times, Kalel revealed the name he gave his prized find: ‘Superman’ – his favorite superhero. “When we decided to name him Kalel, we didn’t realize it was also Superman’s birth name,” his father added.

Admission to the park averages around $10, offering visitors the chance to uncover a wide variety of rocks, minerals, and gemstones. The area’s diamond-rich soil was first discovered in 1906, when farmer John Huddlestone found two unusual stones on his property.

Since then, over 75,000 diamonds have been unearthed at Crater of Diamonds State Park. Kalel’s stone was described by park spokesperson Waymon Cox as roughly the size of a pinto bean and “a very dark brown, like coffee.” The diamond has a frosted look, with a shape resembling a pillow or a kite.
