Hotel habits that drive other guests crazy: Avoid these selfish acts that annoy fellow travelers
Always remember not to do these things when travelling in hotels.

What’s your biggest pet peeve when travelling?
Rude airport rushers with no spatial awareness? Cramped planes with crying children? Barefooted hotel guests?
Well, according to a recent survey by the Hotels.com team, one behaviour above all the rest stands out: leaving your towel on the seats closest to the water before leaving again for the rest of the day.
Whether it’s the hotel swimming pool or the Mediterranean Sea, those tourists that ‘book’ their lounge chair first thing in the morning with their beach towel is the easiest way to annoy your fellow holiday-goers.
‘It’s monopolizing a shared space’
Some replies to the question put out by the hotel company were hilarious: “If the towel doesn’t belong to someone in the pool, then the towel gets placed in the return towel basket. Be present for your lounge chair … reservations not accepted," one user wrote.
“I have great fun dropping those towels in the pool, or just piling them all on [one] lounger,” laughed another.
If you’re reading this thinking ‘it’s not that rude’, it is. It is entirely selfish. Reader’s Digest, who also tackled the same problem, wrote that “the chairs are a shared amenity, not your personal sun throne.”
Musayeva, a certified etiquette coach and the author of three etiquette books, told the aforementioned outlet that “It becomes inconsiderate when saving a chair turns into a territory claim, rather than a temporary step away. If someone places a towel on a lounger at 7 a.m. and doesn’t return until midday, that isn’t thoughtful. It’s monopolizing a shared space. The purpose of reserving a chair is to hold your spot while you’re actively nearby, not to secure it for hours while doing other things.”
The r/TalesFromTheFrontDesk Reddit channel highlights some pet peeves from hotel workers, with the top answer: “When I am clearly on the phone and a guest just starts talking to me like I’m not.” One user replied: “All of these are so real, but the PHONE ONE!!”
