SOCIAL MEDIA

How much money would you have made if you invested $1,000 on Facebook 10 years ago?

Facebook celebrates its 20th anniversary with the social media platform now used by almost half of all people on the planet with over 3 billion monthly active users.

Update:
Aplicación de Facebook

This month Facebook celebrates its 20th anniversary and despite the emergence of the likes of Instagram, Tik Tok and Twitter (X) and ongoing predictions of its platforms demise, Facebook is still going strong, and still adding users.

In 2004 “The Facebook” was launched by Mark Zuckerberg during his time at Harvard with the platform initially designed to connect students at the university later going on to become a global powerhouse, which is now used by almost half of all people on the planet with Facebook now has over 3 billion monthly active users at the last count.

While Facebook may not be the cool social app anymore, and may have seemingly lost its allure among younger audiences in particular, Facebook’s usage over time is actually increasing, in terms of the amount of monthly active users who log in daily.

Facebook’s stock growth

This change in the digital world has not only transformed the way we communicate with each other with social media platforms now dominating our daily lives.

For the faithful who believed in Facebook (Meta) from the outset and following the company’s first IPO in 2012, Meta’s stock has seen spectacular growth.

The initial price of $38 dollars per share has climbed to $474.99 at the time of publication, representing an increase of 1,150% in this period.

This gain means that an initial $1,000 investment in Meta stock in May 2012 would have turned into $12,425 today.

By comparison, the same investment in an index fund that replicates the Nasdaq would have resulted in $5,624, while in the S&P 500, the result would be $3,828.

Facebook’s impact has been so significant that it has propelled founder Zuckerberg, to be ranked among the five richest people in the world, with a reported fortune amounting to $170 billion dollars.

With 3.07 billion monthly active users, Facebook is considered the largest social network in the world, a remarkable achievement considering it has only been in existence for 20 years.
