Charles III became King of England after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, last year on 8 September. The late monarch was 96 years old and had been at the head of the British Royal House for 70 years. She assumed the throne when Charles was just three years old. He had been waiting in the wings since then.

Charles of Wales, England’s oldest prince

Charles held the title of Prince of Wales for seven decades until he passed the title to his eldest son Prince William when he became King. The new monarch was the longest-lasting heir in the history of the country’s monarchy. His great-great-grandfather Edward VII assumed the throne at the age of 59 after his mother Queen Victoria died. She had been the longest-ruling British monarch until Queen Elizabeth II, sitting on the throne for 64 years.

Born in London on November 14, 1948, Charles is the eldest of four siblings who include Anne, Edward and Andrew. He was made Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on 26 July 1958, although his investiture would not take place until more than 10 years later, on 1 July 1969. That day he was crowned by his mother at Caernarfon Castle.

When did Carlos and Camilla meet?

Camilla and Charles met at a polo match in 1970. Despite the mutual attraction, the relationship was not possible. Charles left for military service, while Camilla Shand married Andrew Parker Bowls. In 1981, Charles married Diana Spencer, despite the rumors of infidelity that already surrounded the couple.

Upon taking their nuptials Diana became Princess Diana, the Princess of Wales, and one of the most beloved members of the royal family by the public. The royal couple had two children, Prince William and Prince Harry, born in 1982 and 1984 respectively.

When did Charles and Diana separate?

However, in 1992 the schism between Charles and Diana would come after the infidelity on both their parts was made public. The breakup would become official in 1996 with the couple’s divorce. Lady Di was killed in a tragic car accident a year later.

Camilla separated from Andrew in 1995, they too had had two children together. Ten years later, in 2005, despite the expectation that it would never happen, Charles and Camilla got married. She was considered to be the reason behind the breakup of what had publicly been seen as a fairytale royal marriage at its beginning and for that, Camilla was the most despised woman in Britain.

Camilla became the Duchess of Cornwall but didn’t take the title of the Princess of Wales to avoid further backlash from the public. Now that Charles is King, she will be known as Queen Consort, something that had been unexpected until Queen Elizabeth II expressed her desire that Camilla take the title shortly before she celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne.
