On July 1, the new immigration law (S.B. 1718) enters into force in the state of Florida. The measure was proposed and approved by Governor Ron DeSantis in response to the migration crisis on the country’s southern border.

This new legislation was signed by DeSantis last Tuesday, just two days before Title 42 is due to be finalized. Through this law, companies must comply with new requirements to hire migrants.

How will immigration law affect businesses that hire migrant workers in Florida?

The measure will expand the requirements for state businesses with more than 25 employees to use E-Verify, a system that shows whether migrants have the necessary documents to work in the United States.

Any public or private employer who violates this provision will have to face a maximum fine of up to $1,000 dollars, while migrant workers who make use of false documents or use those of another person will be subject to criminal sanctions.

Florida will not be a sanctuary state that allows for illegal aliens to usurp our laws. IDs issued by sanctuary jurisdictions will be invalidated in the state of Florida and using a false ID to obtain employment will now be considered a felony, said the governor.

S.B. 1718′s other measures

The Republican governor also announced that driver’s licenses issued by other states will not be valid for those with an irregular immigration status. These people will also lose the right to obtain identification documents.

S.B. 1718 will also affect eligibility requirements for Medicare and will focus on the crime of human trafficking. For more information on these aspects, read: Law against undocumented immigrants in Florida: these are the new measures.
